Travel mercies for friends and family on the roads.

Jerome Home and Building Tour, May 19^th & 20^th. Haven will be a rest stop, so please bring in cookies, crackers, veggies, etc. for our guests on those days.

Holy God, one of Jesus’ final earthly acts before he ascended to be with you was to open the minds of his followers so they might understand the Scriptures. We want to know the meaning of your life and death to our daily experiences. We ask for wisdom and understanding as this sacred text is read and proclaimed. AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

As Easter people, we believe God is Lord of both life and death.

We believe that in an astounding act of grace, Jesus suffered and died on the cross to save us from our sins.

We believe, three days later, Jesus was raised from the dead, promising us salvation, not because we deserve it, but out of love, through grace.

CONFESSION AND PARDON

God of grace and mercy, we kneel before you today. We recognize that we are unworthy to be called your children; we are unworthy to be called your friends. Yet you call us son, daughter and friend. Lord Jesus, in light of the sacrifices you made for us, what do we have to offer that is worthy? You were willing to suffer the injustice of a mockery of a trial. You endured the abuse of a violent and cruel system. You even went so far as to die one of the worst deaths that humanity has ever conceived. In the face of all that, Scripture time and time again calls us to be imitators of you, but we are unable or unwilling. Lord, we confess our weakness.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Jesus spoke words that, no matter how many times we hear them, have more meaning than we can fully grasp. “This is my body broken for you and my blood poured out for the forgiveness of sins.” Let us receive all that Christ offers us and be thankful. Amen.

PRAYER

Gracious God, we are here today to celebrate. You have defeated sin and conquered death through the resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ. We recognize that without the cross, we would have no reason to live; we would have no hope. Thank you Father, for giving us hope! We do not know what it was like to watch your Son die, but we know you endure it because of your great love for us. We are full of gratitude and worship.

Unified Prayer:

We come to your table today, risen God, not in memory of that first Easter, but rather in celebration and amazement…for Jesus did not just die on the cross, but through the resurrection, became the risen Christ! We are celebrating an event that has the power to transform each of us.

Earlier this week of the first Easter, the disciples ate bread and drank from the cup with dread of what was to happen that evening. Today, we again will eat and drink from the cup. On this day of resurrection, we eat and drink in the presence of the risen Christ, who gives hope and light to overcome all odds. Holy Spirit, hear our prayers of thanksgiving and joy. Let us experience the risen Christ so that we, like Mary, will say, “I have seen the Lord.”

Wellness Notes – Signs

April is National Stress Awareness Month, National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and April 4^th is National Day of Hope. These reminders give us pause for thought as we enter a new month—EASTER month—when we renew our faith with celebration. Our religious holidays prompt different emotions within our Mind-Body-and Spirit. Christmas gives us HOPE, Pentacost lights a fire in our heart, Lent encourages us to recall sacrifice, and Easter gives us the JOY of Resurrection. Each is a ‘sign’ for us to react in a different way. I recently read a statement that said,

“SIGNS JOG OUR MIND TO TAKE ACTION”.

I was driving down Cornville Road and encountered the series of “Burma Shave Style” signs meant to jog the mind to action. They read as follows:

WELCOME TO CORNVILLE: “WELCOME” stood out as the directive. We can welcome Jesus into our life as our guide, friend, mentor, and sustainer. We welcome new neighbors into our family of faith with enthusiasm. We welcome new habits that improve our health and well being.

A QUIET PLACE: “QUIET” is a directive. Find daily time of quiet. Seek quiet to renew our mind, body, and spirit, as only that ‘pause that refreshes’ can. Take a time of quiet to listen to others and to God speaking just to us. Reflect in quiet to relieve stress, reorganize time, remember, and renew.

PLEASE SLOW DOWN: “SLOW DOWN” can be our directive. In our lives of rush, speed, quick interaction, and everything run by the clock, taking time to slow down can be a life saver. Taking a deep breath and backing off our pace allows reduction of stress, awareness of actions, and safety.

TO A LEISURELY PACE: “LEISURELY” gives us directive. Leisure is defined as, ‘freedom from demands of work or duty; free time to enjoy rest, hobbies, sport, etc.; unhurried ease’. Incorporating leisure into each day allows release of stress, improvement of health and wellness, improvement in our relationships with family and loved ones, and time to celebrate hope.

Be alert to the signs around you that will prompt you toward mind, body, and spiritual wellness.

CONFESSION AND PARDON

Forgiving God, we come before you as sinners who hate to admit our sin. We are aware that we participate in small crucifixions in our lives, sometimes by remaining silent in the face of injustice. We are quick to point fingers at other’s offenses, and we are quick to take offense. We show little grace and yet hope for your grace to be bestowed upon us. This season, may we change our ways as we walk the path of repentance. Amen.

In the name of Christ, against whom the greatest offense was given in the midst of innocence, we are forgiven.

God of great love, take hold of our hearts and let us sit here in the stillness of your presence as we turn our souls to you. CONFESSION

Gracious God, the story of Jesus’ outburst in the temple strikes a nerve with us. We confess that far too often we do not treat your space or your time as sacred.

We do not keep the Sabbath. We count our money when we should be counting our blessings. We fill our lives to the brim with activity and noise, stifling any opportunity to share silence with you. Even in your house, we are preoccupied with our busyness and stress, rather than wholeheartedly focusing on you. Forgive us, merciful God. Reorient us to the truth that you love us and that your will for our lives is good and perfect and true. Amen.

Brothers and sisters, as surely as Jesus cleansed the temple, he cleanses our

One: We are familiar with the tradition of giving things up for Lent,

Many: things we probably should have given up for New Year’s or years ago when we became more serious about our Christian journey.

One: But sometimes this giving up becomes a focus on us,

Many: poor us, noble us, giving up a bad habit.

One: Instead the first disciples took on something—being a disciple,

Many: following Jesus more closely, traveling to Jerusalem, paying attention to Jesus’ teaching and healing, puzzling about feeding his followers, answering the authorities, living deeper and more broadly into a Christ-like life.

One: Ah, the focus is on Jesus, that is what Lent is about.

PASTORAL PRAYER

Merciful Savior, Jesus willingly yielded himself to the deprivation, the temptation and the blessings of the desert. We sometimes experience the desert as well—times of spiritual dryness, physical temptation, or emotional desolation. We feel alone. We fell unworthy and unlovely. Our resolve is tested, and fatigue threatens to overwhelm us. We are harassed by fear and doubt. We are unsure of you and unsure of ourselves. Empower us, gracious God, to follow the example of Jesus. Remind us of your faithfulness in the wilderness. Feed us with your presence. Grant us insight to recognize your redemptive work in the midst of pain. Renew our hearts and minds that we might receive the desert as a gift and embrace what you will do in us there. Wellness Notes – March Through Lent

WELLNESS NOTES

“In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind” John 1:4

This Lenten Season we may NOT be encouraging you to “Walk to Jerusalem” or even to ‘give up’ an unhealthy habit as we have in past years. This season, let us look at HIM as life and how Jesus giving his life allows us to make our light shine. Our light can shine more brightly if we work toward living a healthy life.

Excerpt from ‘Prayer Prescribed’ a new book by Dr. Anne Borik (author of SignChiDo) states:

…The path to preserving your health and well-being is not about the absence of anything. Health is not the absence of illness; it is being healthy mind, body and soul. Losing weight is not about the absence of food; it is eating the right foods. Life is not the absence of death; it is living with your entire being. Therefore, in order to live a healthy life, you must be alive and do the things that keep you alive–Breathe, Move, Eat, be Positive and Pray.

BREATHE: Right now take a deep, cleansing breath. Sit or stand straight upright; Inhale through your nose while raising both arms to shoulder level in front of your body with palms turned upward. Exhale through your mouth as you turn palms downward and lower the arms together to below waist level. Practice this three or four times. This increases oxygen to your brain, decreases blood pressure, relaxes your muscles, and stretches your lung capacity.
MOVE: Some of you will want to put on your pedometer and work toward the 10,000 steps per day that is recommended by the American Heart Association for healthy exercise. Some may just walk twice to the mailbox and back—then next week make three trips, etc. Some may prefer to sit in their chair and just do range of motion of each limb and joint of the body. JUST GET MOVING and feel the healthy benefits.
EAT: We mentioned last month the increase of fruits and veggies. Try for putting a RAINBOW of foods in your body each day. Red berries or tomatoes, Orange carrots or peppers, Yellow tomatoes or squash, Green leafy veggies or peppers, Blue berries or grapes, Violet fruits or eggplant. Be creative and enjoy the healthy feeling.
BE POSITIVE: Greet the day with a “What a beautiful morning” statement; tell someone you love them or write a note of a happy memory; encourage positive thoughts and counteract negatives around you. THINK HAPPY.
PRAY: Share your day with God. Tell HIM your gratitudes, your fears, your wishes, your needs, your wants, and your feelings. Incorporate prayer in your morning, noon, & night. Find a new prayer and post it where you can see it and repeat it daily.

CALL TO CONFESSION

Every glimpse of Christ’s glory reminds us of the hope we have in him both now and for the future. It also reminds us of our own inadequacy and insufficiency. Let us go to God in prayer to confess our sin.

CONFESSION

Merciful and forgiving Savior, like Elijah, a review of our lives reveals a mixed bag. At times we’ve displayed courage, at other times fear. Faith is co-mingled with doubt. We are compassionate one minute and holding a grudge the next. Humility is nudged aside by pride. Contentment loses ground to envy. We rely on you in obedient submission only to turn around and discover that we’ve seized the reins of control to our lives. Worry steals the peace that passes all understanding. Hopefulness dissolves into self-pity. We confess that we are broken and are powerless to change it. We need your mercy. We want to be made whole and new. We ask for your forgiveness and for you to do in us and for us what we cannot. Amen.

INVITATION

Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another. Therefore, let us confess our sin before God and one another.

CONFESSION AND ASSURANCE

Holy One, we are weary, we often believe we are alone, and we feel caught on a treadmill we can’t get off. We’re running a race—but we don’t know where the finish line is, or have any idea what the prize is for completing the race. We have taken our eyes off of you, the one who designed the course and sets the pace. Rather than setting our sights on you, rather than determining our priorities through our faith, we have allowed ourselves to be led by the values of the society, and whatever new shiny thing grabs our attention. Forgive us for our lack of faith. Help us to turn back to you—the source of our existence and our strength. Trusting in your providence, confident you will carry us in times of sorrow, assured you will provide all the strength we need. Amen.

Beloved, Isaiah says, “Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.” The God who created you and knows you by name sent his Son to redeem you, and not to condemn. In Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

Wellness Notes – A New Year!

WELLNESS NOTES

“Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.” Isaiah 60:1

JANUARY: A new year, a new month, a new start!! Light shines on the newness before us with encouraging brightness. My husband and I begin the New Year with a group of RV friends, out in the desert, around a roaring campfire. We say goodbye to the old year, old thoughts, unfinished goals, and sorrows, and look ahead with the firelight shining brightly on our future. It is a time of starting a new calendar, setting new goals, (sounds better than ‘resolutions’), and making new plans. Let each of us “ Arise, shine; for ‘our’ light has come” in the form of the baby Jesus, who came to shed light into each of our lives , illuminating the darkness that might dim our positive outlook, forward thinking, and bright NEW YEAR. How can we use this light to build a better, more healthful, brighter year ahead:

Do a brief meditation: Close your eyes, sit comfortably, and breathe deeply. Envision the Christ Light brightening your heart, then allow that light to travel throughout your entire body—limb by limb, organ by organ, —lending the healing, energizing power of Christ’s love to clear out the darkness, pain, obstructed areas, and dimness from your mind, body, and spirit. Allow the light to flow freely as you breathe deeply and sit quietly for a few moments. As you open our eyes, may you feel the refreshing power of LIGHT throughout your being.
Assure you are being outdoors in the light for several periods each day. If it is a dull, dark, day turn on all of the lights in your room and spend more time in the light than in dull areas.
Allow light to shine FROM you each day. Make a conscious effort to greet everyone you meet with a smile (and yourself in the mirror) letting the Christ Light within you shine out to others. Know that if the only positive activity you might do is your smile, you have witnessed to another.
Fill your plate with ‘light and bright’ foods. Include oranges, lemon, yellow and red peppers, a rainbow of colored fruits, vegetables, and fluids in your daily meal plan. Set the goal of 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables in EACH daily intake. (make a list & check off the numbers!!)
Lighten your step!! Take out a walking stick and take a daily walk, making your stride longer, your head held high, and breathing freely as you try for at least 30 minutes of walking daily (it can be in spurts or even with a walker or pacing in your chair).
Shed light on your words. Try for communicating more positive thoughts than negatives; using uplifting words; speaking kindness; encouraging another; and brightening your own outlook.
Share your “light” each day. God has given you special gifts within your heart, mind, and soul. Use those gifts to the best of your ability and avoid ‘hiding them under a bushel’. Let your light shine!!

Jerome Food Pantry

I would like to inform everyone in town of a new way to serve your community. There will now be a container to drop off your donations for the Jerome food pantry in Town Hall. I’m sure many of you would donate if you had a convenient way and understood the need.

There is always a need for help to supply our pantry! Over the years we have had only two town folk regularly donate. I thought perhaps people just don’t know what we are doing here or how we supply the community’s needs.

So, for your information and our hope for your participation:

Our town food pantry has been ongoing over the last several years at Haven UMC a congregation of about 8 families. We currently average about $300.00 a month on food cost and it continues to climb. That doesn’t include donated food or food cards. A sign in book keeps track of the number of persons who use the pantry each week (10-12avg.) and whether they are from Jerome or another area. Some coats and clothing for the season are available also. A few people have no other source than us. We welcome anyone who comes in on Thursday or Sunday morning, as well as share friendship and coffee.

Perhaps, like me, you know what it’s like to be the one in need and want to gratefully give back. If you have questions or suggestions, please contact Patty Bell or myself Pastor Vicki at 928 632-0838. Financial donations can be written to Haven with a notation to food pantry. Those donations are only used for food purchases and recorded as such. All non-perishable food donations need to be unopened and have no expired dates to ensure quality for those receiving them.

I believe together we can make a great difference in the lives of those who are struggling today, tomorrow and always because, “The poor will always be with us”.

Wellness Notes – December, 2011

WELLNESS NOTES

“He will be called Immanuel.” Matthew 1:23

“The name Immanuel means God with us.” Isaiah 7:14

December is the month to look at the birth of Jesus ‘which means God with us’. As we look toward Christmas we are bombarded by the hype of buying (without the focus of giving); the media frenzy that makes us feel guilty if we are not trying to outdo those around us; and the focus on greed that began earlier than November. Little in what we see or hear encourages us to see or feel God With Us. As Christians, maybe we just need frequent reminders to keep the Christ in our Christmas. (how about sticky notes around our environment with “God is With Us”!!)

Before I began to write this article I was watching Dr. OZ who had as his guest, Joel Osteen, talking about the power of prayer. They spoke of the miracles of the power of prayer in healing and the strength that comes from looking to God as our source of power and guidance. Isn’t prayer the ultimate “God With Us” experience? These two popular men spoke of the power prayer has and the importance of ‘believing we are worth healing and worth what we ask of God’. Isn’t strengthening our prayer life one of the best ways we can ‘Keep Christ in our Christmas’ and realize the wonderful gift we have received of “God With Us”?

Make December our month to strengthen our spirit through increasing our prayer life. Centering our prayers on the positive power that comes from lifting our praise , our fears, our joys, and our desires to the one who came to our life as our greatest gift, may make this time of year one filled with energy and amazing miracles. Believing that God is indeed with us, that we are here to fulfill a purpose, and that someone needs the gifts we are given to share in this world, will give our Holiday time a sense of power. We can go above the noise and greed and secular hype to find our spot of serenity, peace, and renewed strength. Let this power carry us into the New Year with a resolve to be more welcoming, more worshipful, and more caring, as we discover Christ’s transforming love, and serve others.

Blessings from Haven – December, 2011

I hope you all enjoyed thankful time with family and friends over the holiday. We were blessed to supply 5 full turkey dinners to those who are struggling at this time. As we approach Christmas it is my hope that we all will continue to be grateful for whatever we have and share with those who have less. The true joy of the season is received by doing for others sacrificially, which means it may be difficult.

Haven will be having a 6:00 pm Candlelight service on Christmas Eve. But no Christmas day service on Sunday. Our evening offering will be shared between Heifer project and Jerome Food Pantry this year. A collection box will be available for canned goods as well.

Remember your neighbors during these cold months, even those you do not know, as many are struggling and have not asked for help. Some of our own town’s folk are camping out because they have no place to call home. We can give them food and blankets, but love is the greatest gift of all. Perhaps you can join with us in making a difference in the lives of those in need right in our own backyard.

The greatest gift I ever received is God’s forgiveness, and the greatest Joy I’ve ever known is God’s unconditional love. I pray that all of you will receive these gifts of wonder in this season of giving; Love, Joy, Peace and Hope.

But in our hearts, we know that we more often avert our eyes, pretending not to see the homeless person, avoiding anyone who is different, and staying away from those who are suffering because we don’t know what to say. “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ?” I Corinthians 6:15

November is Diabetes Awareness Month!! In considering the needs of those of us who deal with Diabetes in our life or the lives of those we love, it bears repeating information recently seen in our local newspapers and physician offices. “WHAT’S ON YOUR PLATE” (the new USDA dietary guidelines) is such an important tool in caring for Diabetes, related Heart Disease, Blood Pressure issues, Weight concerns, and so many other wellness matters. Knowing that choices we make on a daily basis of what we put on our mealtime plates will ultimately have a bearing on our health concerns, motivates us to find a simple method of making those choices. The “MY PLATE” format gives us clear directions of how our healthy meal plan should look and gives us visual cues to help understand portion sizes. Check out additional information at choosemyplate.gov . Keep in mind for each that you think about how much food you put on your plate, cup or bowl. Look more closely at your serving sizes and include foods from each food group in each meal. Removing the word “DIET” from you focus and realizing for a healthy meal plan you can eat the things you like, you just need to eat them ‘smarter’. Some tips that may help include:

Make half your plate fruits and vegetables Breakfast can even include a veggie omelet or low salt V-8
Make at least half of your grains ‘whole’ grains. Become a label reader and avoid the processed foods.
Switch to skim or 1% dairy products
Vary your protein food choices. Twice a week make seafood the protein on your plate and include more beans and peas, nuts, and eggs.
Cut back on sodium and empty calories from solid fats and sugars
Make sure you are moving 30 minutes each day. (even the chairbound can do this!!)

This is all things you have heard over and over in life, but as we look at becoming God’s WELL children, make this the month you begin to make changes that benefit your health and wellness.

Jerome resident Christine B escaped with minor injuries following an automobile accident Wednesday evening.

Peg and Franks’ son Paul is in China on a missionary trip.

Travel mercies for the many traveling to and from homes.

PRAYERS AND OFFERING

CONFESSION

Gracious God, we confess our greed to you. We spend our days striving

and working toward wealth that is temporal, wealth that does not bring

eternal joy. We are more concerned with the condition of the souls who do

not know you. We confess that we forget just how good the Good News of

the gospel really is. Give us hearts for the kingdom. Let us seek only the

treasure that comes from knowing you. Thank you for your forgiveness.

We are not worthy, but you are merciful and we are so grateful. Amen.

WORDS OF ASSURANCE: Friends, we have the assurance that Jesus Christ came into the world to forgive sinners. Hear the good news and rejoice: You are forgiven! Hallelujah! Amen.

So, we ask you today to accept this offering of thanksgiving and transform it into your love, felt throughout the globe. Amen.

Dick L’s niece is being treated for esophageal cancer.

Peg and Franks’ son Don is still unemployed. Son Paul is in China on a missionary trip. Prayers of love and support to both of these men in their struggles and adventures.

Travel mercies for the Ribelins, the Boardmans and Kitty’s daughter.
